LONG DISTANCE LOVE: PREETI & TIJIL
#REALSTORY In The Words of Preeti……
HE MAKES MY BRAIN WORK AND I MAKE HIM SMILE
Universe conspires to bring together two people who are meant to be together but it stops right there. Staying together is a choice we make all by ourselves and that was a choice we both made happily. He was a Neurologist in America and I was a Dentist in India. He makes my brain work and I make him smile.
Tijil and I go back to 2016 when it all started. After starting my masters, I began looking for some courses in the US to further my career. During this time, I heard from my mother that Tijil (son of my parents’ friends) is currently enrolled in a residency program in the US. I texted him a few times to inquire about different courses offered in his University. I distinctly remember that it would always take him a few days to respond to my texts each time. I decided to speak with him to speed things up and get any relevant information I could. This would be the first time we speak. And believe it or not, our first conversation lasted just over 7 hours. And most of it was just talking about our lives, and our experiences growing up. I clearly remember our conversation; he was really funny and had so many interesting stories to share. Soon after, we started chatting more frequently. He was more abrupt with responses now but still a bit hesitant to call more frequently. He confessed the reason a few months later that he was not ready for a long-distance relationship, but in our case, he just couldn’t help himself and slowly gave in. Our conversations got more frequent gradually, and we found ourselves speaking almost daily for several hours, even if it meant compromising our sleep. Few months later, he decided to take me by surprise and visited India for just 3 days from US. We stayed at a fancy hotel, and had a great time. We immensely enjoyed each other’s company. Few months later, he again surprised me by visiting India just to celebrate New Year with me. Our conversations kept getting longer, and it pretty much got to a point that we were either working or talking. By this time, we both knew we liked each other a great deal. I distinctly remember the day he uttered the three-magic works. I couldn’t stop blushing the entire night (obviously, I did not sleep).
Maybe I took the quote too seriously. We travelled to Miami, Puerto Rico, Greece, Texas, Lake Tahoe, New York among other places during the next two years. We had an engagement party in India on 13th January 2018 in Delhi. Thereafter, we visited Greece, and despite difficulty taking time off, we managed to pull off a few days to visit Santorini and celebrate love. We were also able to squeeze a pre-wedding photoshoot there, which I am glad we did as the pictures turned out to be amazing. This was followed by trip to Texas where Tijil showed me his side of the world, and why he loved nature. We went on an exploratory nature trip, and among many things, we went camping on a beautiful secluded beach, hiking, floating on a river, and grilling by the lake. Given my nature, he also took me dancing and showed me how to two-step. We experienced living with each other under normal circumstances for the first time, and it actually made us fall in love with each other even more.
While Tijil finished his training, we started planning our marriage. Four months before our marriage, I made one last trip to US before it was time to move here permanently. He showed me around New York for a few days, and then we made a road trip to Alabama, where we had already decided on our dream house. I loved living with him and setting up our house. Even though we weren’t married, it felt like it during this time. We also attended a wedding in Lake Tahoe during this time, a very good friend of Tijil’s. It felt very special as it was almost time for us to get married, and we could associate with all the special moments the wedding couple shared.
Tijil was very up front, and always said ‘I trust you, no matter what the circumstances are, and I also trust you to reciprocate. Don’t ever lie to me (however small it may be), or it will ruin our beautiful relationship, and I would reciprocate’. Despite the long distance (this was literally ‘Saat Samundar Paar’), Tijil never let insecurity seep in our relationship. I would give him added credit for making our journey more beautiful and a successful one. Even from miles apart, not only he made sure that we were in constant reciprocal communication, and respected each other’s advice, but also treasured other person’s privacy and freedom while trusting each other.
Anybody who knows both of us cannot imagine us being together because we have absolutely opposite personalities. He is soft spoken, modest, introvert, adventurous, simple and way mature for his age. On the contrary, I am loud, very talkative, lively, extrovert, social, fashionable and exact opposite of his personality. We always had (and still do) this magnetic pull towards each other, may be because we balance each other so well.
